In the western outskirts of today's city was discovered an old ancient settlement, which existed in the period I - III century AD. During the Middle Ages, the settlement life moved to a more protected place 3 km. south. The settlement was called Zelin, and in the 14th century it was included in possession of Sevast Ognyan - a civil and military governor of the Sofia region with the seat of the highly fortified fortress "Bozhenishki Urvich". On the place of today's town there is a settlement mentioned for the first time in the Ottoman register from the 16th century. In 1866 the small village was declared a town and administrative centre with a new name Orhanie. After the Liberation, he experienced various economic, political and cultural changes. From 1934 the old name of the town was changed to the name of the poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev.
Municipal enterprise “Tourism” Botevgrad builds a Tourist Information Center – Botevgrad and administers tourism on behalf of the Municipality of Botevgrad. The most significant site in the Municipality – Bozhenishki Urvich Fortress – is operated by municipal enterprise “Bozhenishki Urvic”.
We turned Botevgrad into the first "Wikigrad" in Bulgaria. In 2017, the innovative project was developed by the Municipality and Wikipedia Bulgaria. The aim was to create a freely accessible online encyclopedia in which residents and guests of the city can find information about all important cultural and natural sites, historical sites and famous people associated with Botevgrad and the villages around it. We invest funds from our own revenues in improving the general infrastructure and accessibility to the tourist sites in the Municipality of Botevgrad. We strive to improve accessibility to and between sites of tourist interest in the suburban area in all seasons. We improve the development of the urban environment and the green system of the Municipality.
In pursuance of the Strategy for sustainable development of tourism in the Municipality of Botevgrad 2019 - 2025 we annually undertake a number of activities, the implementation of which significantly improves the tourist environment in Botevgrad and the surrounding settlements of the municipality. We will continue to follow the set priority activities in the Strategy in order to develop the potential of Botevgrad as an attractive tourist destination.
