Since the Roman times the vine was growing in the vicinity of Negotin town, apparently from the 3rd century AD. At the time when phylloxera was devastating the vineyards of France, in the 1970s, Negotin region appeared as an exporter of wine to France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia. The region was not affected by phylloxera because domestic vines were grown on a sandy soil along the Danube. According to current estimates, there are about 1000 ha under vineyards in the Negotin vineyards. Some autochthonous and old varieties of vine are cultivated here. Those are bagrina, spice, prokupac, vranac and smederevka. A white wine produced from Bagrina has a golden yellow color and a characteristic bouquet. Today, this old grape variety has been replaced by Italian Riesling, Sauvignon and Semion. The Začinak is a grape variety that serves as a dye. Rajac, Rogljevo and Smedovac are three neighboring villages with a rich wine history and very attractive cellars (pivnica), are the verya special part of the vineyards of the Negotin region. These villages have the most fragrant red wines, thanks to ideal combination of a soil, sun and an altitude of 150 to 250 meters. Among Krajina wines, red wines obtained from Prokupac grape, Red Burgundac and Gamay are of great reputation. The wines have an intense red color, a pleasant taste and bouquet. The best white wines are produced from Bagrina, Semijon, Italian Riesling, Sauvignon and Smederevka.
