The town of Mezdra is a relatively new settlement, formed around the station at the end of the 19th century. Before that, only the fortress was inhabited. Archaeologists have found historical continuity from the Stone-Copper Age (5th millennium BC) to the Late Bulgarian Middle Ages (13th-14th centuries). Due to its important place near the ford of the Iskar River, today's fortress has been inhabited for over 2000 years. During the Ottoman rule, it was abandoned and gradually became invisible. Excavations began in the 1970s, and in 2013 under a project under OP "Regional Development," the fortress was restored and socialized. Exhibition halls and a visitor centre have been built next to it.

The Municipality of Mezdra manages the Archaeological Complex "Kaleto" and develops various projects (eg "History, culture and nature – the tourist attractions of the Municipality of Mezdra" is funded by the Operational Program "Regional Development")

For the second year in a row, the Festival of Medieval Traditions, Life and Culture "Kaleto Mezdra" has been organized. The rest of the time, visitors can shoot a bow or join an applied art workshop.
