The Meschi Tower

The tower is believed to date from the 16th century. It had a residential and defensive character. It was built for the local Ayans (influential citizens in the Ottoman Empire). In the turbulent years of wars and revolts, the Ayans needed protection, as well as respect among Christians, in order to preserve power over the enslaved population and at the same time strengthen the authority of the Ottoman rulers. At the end of the 19th century it was rebuilt as a clock tower. In 2006 it was reconstructed. A bell and a dial have been installed, as well as new artistic lighting.
