Choklyovo swamp

Choklyovo marsh is located near the village of Baikalsko, municipality. Radomir. It is a protected area covering 320 ha. It develops protected bird species and is the largest peat deposit in the Balkans - so in 1992 it was declared a protected area. Peat has healing properties and marsh is associated with healing legends. Evidence of the existence of a settlement from the time of the Thracians was found in a settlement mound next to the swamp. In recent decades, the Municipality of Radomir and private entrepreneurs have tried to capitalize the peat deposit in medical services, but no result is available.
Choklyovo swamp is a protected area where construction and production is prohibited, which can change or damage the area, water composition, water regime, etc. No fire can be lit in its vicinity, because reeds and peat are flammable. Hunting and fishing are absolutely forbidden all year round, because many of the local species are protected, especially birds. That is why it is forbidden to collect eggs and spoil bird nests. During nesting, the access of pets, bathing and use of vessels is prohibited.
The Choklvo marsh is located at a relatively high altitude - 850 m. Attempts have been made to socialize it as a tourist site, but at the moment it is neglected - there are no trails or signs, there are no tourist amenities in the area.
